This year’s 15th annual Kentucky Derby event held May 7th at KEOWEE Key, was a spectacular success thanks to the 40 volunteers involved. This is one of the biggest events held each year at the Club. Guests were greeted in the parking lot and escorted to the door in golf carts decorated to look like horses! The interior of the Club was transformed by hundreds of red roses and hats - hats on the tables, hats on wreaths and, most notably, gorgeous hats on the women in attendance. Ladies filed into the parade and hat contest beginning under the decorated arch in the dining room.

In anticipation of the Derby start, the KEOWEE Downs race was held outside on the lawn. The weather could not have been more perfect with just a little breeze under blue skies. Participants cheered for their favorite jockey while sipping on specialty drinks - Mint Juleps and Derby Delights.

There was enough cheering to warrant a noise violation! Afterwards, a buffet meal of beef tenderloin was served followed by Chef’s special bourbon bread pudding. The event ended in a traditional raffle with prizes including a rose bush with lottery ticket chances, a luxury box at a Clemson football game, various meals at the Club, Golf for four, and tennis or Pickleball lessons.

The Keowee Key Social Committee will see you again next year for our 16th Derby...and the 143rd Kentucky Derby Race for the Roses!
